The creator of “Hamilton” and the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” invite you to a cinematic event, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big... “In the Heights.”

Lights up on Washington Heights...The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.

“In the Heights” fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda’s kinetic music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu’s lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience.

“In the Heights” stars Anthony Ramos (“A Star is Born,” Broadway’s “Hamilton”), Corey Hawkins (“Straight Outta Compton,” “BlacKkKlansman”), singer/songwriter Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera (TV’s “Vida”), Olga Merediz (Broadway’s “In the Heights”), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Broadway’s “Rent”), Gregory Diaz IV (Broadway’s “Matilda the Musical”), Stephanie Beatriz (TV’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Dascha Polanco (TV’s “Orange is the New Black”) and Jimmy Smits (the “Star Wars” films).

Chu directed the film from a screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes, based on the musical stage play, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegría Hudes and concept by Miranda. Miranda, Hudes, Scott Sanders, Anthony Bregman and Mara Jacobs produced the film, with David Nicksay and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers.

Behind the camera, Chu reunited with his “Crazy Rich Asians” production designer, Nelson Coates, and editor, Myron Kerstein. He also collaborated with director of photography Alice Brooks (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and costume designer Mitchell Travers (“Eighth Grade”). Original songs by Miranda. Alex Lacamoire (“Fosse/Verdon”) and Bill Sherman (“Sesame Street”) served as executive music producers. The choreography is by Christopher Scott, who previously teamed with Chu on the award-winning “The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers.”
“In the Heights” was filmed in New York, primarily on location in the dynamic community of Washington Heights.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a 5000 Broadway / Barrio Grrrl! / Likely Story / SGS Pictures Production, A Jon M. Chu Film, “In the Heights.” Slated to open on June 10, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures. It will be available on HBO Max for 31 days from theatrical release.

“In the Heights” is rated PG-13 for some language and suggestive references.

Oscar needs to go to Olga Merediz. She embodies today's grandmother in just about any Hispanic family. Not only is the grandmother the matriarch but from the home cooking to always worrying about every family member. To skipping on taking pills because she CAN'T AFFORD TO TAKE HER PILLS. if you paid attention to the beginning where "Abuela" takes the cloths to the cleaners he charges her over a hundred dollars. This teaches everyone to speak to the elderly in there family "see if they can afford there pills". It should be free by the government for seniors for their endless years of sales tax etc tax. Pay attention to Olga's role as the grandmother, see her pain in when she walks and her gestures while talking. 👀👁️👁️👀👁️👁️👀👁️👁️ If you pay attention you will see the Oscar that Olga Merediz deserves. That pain hits home to many many many Hispanics in today's society.

I am going to say this. I did not care for it. I know that people are saying it's good for many reasons. However, my issue is the lack of diversity amongst the Hispanic community in these moves it was very whitewashed. If you know the heights it's a melting pot of shades of brown and black. However, what was shown was the majority of white or mixed Hispanics of Spanish and Taino descent. I am tired of the only time Afro Latinos get their shine is in the African American Movie or television shows. I mean I don't have an issue with them playing black roles because they are technically are black of Africa descent but when will they get the representation in their own community. It's 2021 and my Afro ( to me are the saddest looking Hispanics there is ) need representation in Hispanic movies and media.

@Aldon Caba I am talking about the main characters and you don’t have to be dark ); to be Afro Latinos or black Caribbean. I with all the Afro Latinos in the industry I saw probably one mixed or light skin Afro Latina the one going to school other than that no
Aldon Caba
Aldon Caba 2 tundi tagasi
I feel like it was quite diverse. The main cast may not have been as dark but for example during the “In the Heights” opening song, we see a bunch of Afro Latinos of different shades and colors. I feel like the main cast could have been more diverse (but if they were going based off the musical, most of the characters were light then too).

Alright, I admit shedding a few tears at 0:59 when my country's map was shown on screen. That brought so many beautiful memories from my infancy. Representation does matter--that's no cliche. And, if a movie can evoke so many different emotions in a person within less than a minute of the opening scene... it is a definite MUST-WATCH. I need to support this film and everyone whose hands touched it. Thank you from the heart of a Dominican-American and all of the family members I am dragging with me to see this at the theater! Is it being cliche and superficial in its stereotyping of the struggles presented to poor Latino communities on purpose? Like is it supposed to simultaneously be relevant social commentary on marginalized demographics and a satire of the formula and banality of the cultural affectations and idiosyncrasies that pervade even the most socioeconomically and culturally embattled demographics across the country? Or is it just bad

Excellent movie loved it, but in reality Washington heights is not as mixed as the movie shows, its a majority Dominican neighborhood like 80% Dominican alone, theres a few other Hispanics but its nothing to big. its more Dominican than anything else in Washington heights in real life thats why its called “little Dominican Republic “ You have a few puerto ricans but not too much and almost no cubans in the heights , im Puerto rican and lived here my whole 26 years of life and experience the culture and life here. theres more Jews and irish people than puerto ricans or cubans in The Heights for sure but no more than Dominicans ; the Heights is Around 80% Dominican alone, around 16% White like Jew/Irish and then there is like 8% other Hispanics and like 3% black americans

It's weird bc it's kind of both. It was originally written like in the early 2000s(Lin started at 19, He's 41 now). But it didn't become a play until 2008. And now it's a movie but they tried to make it fit modern times. Like DACA wasn't part of the original plot(It's only in the movie, not even in the play). It apparently changed a. couple times

Why is Puerto Rican’s talking about Dominican Heights heritage sorry but no get a Dominican and there is no Rican’s in the heights or flags 👍🏽❤️ thassa fact I’m born in 1989 and no Rican’s love here or celebrate here etc
S R.
S R. 8 tundi tagasi
@Amadeus Luciann exactly there were a few more Puerto ricans around the 1960s in Washington heights but by the time Lin manuel was born in 1980 Washington heights was already a predominantly Dominican neighborhood with few puerto ricans here and there so theres no way he a experience a puerto rican culture in Washington heights or inwood aka Dyckman, Lin manuel even said it that he played a Dominican actor because Washington heights is a Dominican neighborhood and the experience that Dominicans lived in Washington heights, so to put it more clear Lin manuel was exposed to a Dominican American experience in Washington heights and not a puerto rican one plain and simple
S R.
S R. 8 tundi tagasi
@Gia D. if he wanted to “a movie that represents all Hispanics “ yet they all are playing a Dominican role in the movie that’s not diversity of all Hispanics, even though they try to play a Dominican role it was way off because majority of the actors were puerto ricans and it shows they haven’t lived or experience of the Dominican culture in Washington heights. I hope you understand my point of view and others that thats the point people should have opinions and also say things how its, and some people will get offended and think that they are not representing things how it is , i hope i didn’t offended you by any means, i am Puerto rican myself are you puerto rican also?
S R.
S R. 8 tundi tagasi
@Gia D.well the problem is that he isn’t focusing in all boroughs he is focusing in a uptown Manhattan neighborhood of Washington heights that isn’t as diverse as the movie make it seem thats the problem. If he wanted to make a diverse latin movie he should’ve had gone to Queens Where you have a whole pot of Ecuadorians, Dominicans, Colombians, mexicans, peruvians. But not uptown Manhattan that is majority Dominican alone. Not even the bronx because the bronx also is Majority Dominican and Puerto rican. I get your point but at the same time I don’t
Gia D.
Gia D. 8 tundi tagasi
@S R. it’s only a movie i don’t know why people get upset it’s not 100% accurate he wanted to make a musical that represented all hispanics which is why you see other ethnicities. I mean there are other Latino ethnicities in New York but they live in different boroughs so I don’t see the big deal honestly lol
S R.
S R. 9 tundi tagasi
@Gia D. what other Hispanics besides Dominicans live in the heights back then? Some cubans and some puerto ricans but thats about it , also lin manuel is writing about a Dominican experience in Washington heights not a Puerto rican experience bro. Even though majority of the “in the heights movie” are Puerto rican in real they are playing a Dominican role because Washington heights have a long rich history of Dominican story and experience up until this day
Amadeus Luciann

Washington heights is a 80% Dominican American neighborhood, and everything you saw in the movie is Majority act because Dominicans don’t act like that or practice most thing that was played in the movie, im Puerto rican live in Washington heights my whole life and I have never seen Dominican act like that or do the whole BlackOut thing when someone dies thats more of a puerto rican practice and puerto ricans aren’t big in population in Washington heights TbH so they dont even know what really goes in the heights in real life lol, coming from a true puerto rican myself, love to all my domis🇵🇷🇩🇴📍

Yes definitely i love this movie it made me tear up a little, only thing that it kinda through me off was that even though that majority of the cast played a Dominican role they are Puerto rican in real life and the only Dominican the girl played a puerto rican role , when in reality Washington heights is a Dominican neighborhood in Majority around 80% thats why its Called officially “Little Dominican Republic “ and puerto ricans really dont have nothing to do with Washington heights there isn’t a big puerto rican population in the Heights its super small and im Puerto rican myself lived my whole life in The Heights and know how it is. Most of the movie in reality was portraying puerto rican culture rather than Dominican culture, they didn’t put bachata, merengue which are Dominican and thats all you hear in Washington heights, so while the movie was good it was kinda misleading with the real culture of the Heights. Also the struggles and all Dominicans in the heights been through it’s something to admire because Washington heights is Still majority a Dominican American neighborhood even though gentrification has been trying to come in but its hard for gentrification because Dominicans are hard workers and majority of the businesses in Washington heights are Dominican around 80% plus every Dominican come from different social economies so it will be very difficult for gentrification to hit the heights hard it has tried but it slow down the gentrification process compared to other neighborhoods in manhattan like harlem and lower east side where gentrification took over harlem, Dominicans have definitely pushed this neighborhood forward with there hard work, shout out to all my Dominicans from a puerto rican brother 🇵🇷🇩🇴📍
S R.
S R. 12 tundi tagasi
@Karina Mora you didn’t get my point. My point was that obviously the movie was promoting puerto rican culture rather than Dominican culture, there’s barely any puerto ricans in The heights you dont see a lot. Majority of the Heights in real life is Dominican. And I’ve never ever seen Lin manuel in Washington heights maybe he did lived here back then but I’ve never seen this guy in this neighborhood in my 26 years of life
Karina Mora
Karina Mora 15 tundi tagasi
@S R. Lin is Puerto Rican and he still lives there. Watch his interviews, he says he lives in one of those buildings
S R.
S R. 16 tundi tagasi
@Amadeus Luciann i think Lin manuel should’ve do a movie in the bronx if he wanted to portray more of a puerto rican culture but not Washington heights where there’s barely any puerto rican lol
S R.
S R. 16 tundi tagasi
@Amadeus Luciann ayee bro thats cool! Im actually from 176 and fort Washington my wife is Dominican and all and all her family lives in the heights in 175-177 and fort Washington, and bro im Puerto Rican and i love Dominicans to the death, but its what you’re saying the act and representation of Dominican and Washington heights in general was way off in the movie , while i liked the move i kinda felt offended because i know Dominicans don’t act like that in Washington heights with all that jumping and screaming around deff not something u see here lol. Dominicans are of course fun party people pero not like this movie shows it, i feel like im half Dominican even though im Puerto rican i was born here and all that so i agree with you 100% bro🇵🇷🇩🇴

Exactly I’d isn’t respect it the creator and the lead actor ain’t even Dominican and they telling us how we live and their American Dominican accent is OFF OFF I’m from 177 Broadway we sing when we talk even in English lol Puerto Rican’s can’t tell a Dominican story sorry because most of them don’t like us .. while we don’t care to like them or dislike them
