Washington Heights: say it, so it doesn’t disappear. - in theaters and streaming exclusively on @HBOMax* June 11.

The creator of “Hamilton” and the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” invite you to a cinematic event, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big... “In the Heights.”

Lights up on Washington Heights...The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.

“In the Heights” fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda’s kinetic music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu’s lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience.

“In the Heights” stars Anthony Ramos (“A Star is Born,” Broadway’s “Hamilton”), Corey Hawkins (“Straight Outta Compton,” “BlacKkKlansman”), singer/songwriter Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera (TV’s “Vida”), Olga Merediz (Broadway’s “In the Heights”), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Broadway’s “Rent”), Gregory Diaz IV (Broadway’s “Matilda the Musical”), Stephanie Beatriz (TV’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Dascha Polanco (TV’s “Orange is the New Black”) and Jimmy Smits (the “Star Wars” films).

Chu directed the film from a screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes, based on the musical stage play, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegría Hudes and concept by Miranda. Miranda, Hudes, Scott Sanders, Anthony Bregman and Mara Jacobs produced the film, with David Nicksay and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers.

Behind the camera, Chu reunited with his “Crazy Rich Asians” production designer, Nelson Coates, and editor, Myron Kerstein. He also collaborated with director of photography Alice Brooks (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and costume designer Mitchell Travers (“Eighth Grade”). Original songs by Miranda. Alex Lacamoire (“Fosse/Verdon”) and Bill Sherman (“Sesame Street”) served as executive music producers. The choreography is by Christopher Scott, who previously teamed with Chu on the award-winning “The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers.”
“In the Heights” was filmed in New York, primarily on location in the dynamic community of Washington Heights.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a 5000 Broadway / Barrio Grrrl! / Likely Story / SGS Pictures Production, A Jon M. Chu Film, “In the Heights.” Slated to open on June 18, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures. It will be available on HBO Max for 31 days from theatrical release.

“In the Heights” is rated PG-13 for some language and suggestive references.

I love musicals but I did not enjoy this movie. It was too much singing and not enough dialogue. It took away from the true meaning of the movie. Kind of annoying actually. Nevertheless, I'm happy the culture was represented well

Yea looks like this woke movie is going to be a box office of bomb. Go woke go broke
Harland Williams Johnston
@Thomas Pulsiver Doesn't changed the fact that the movie was amazing. Even In The Heights came to Broadway in 2007 before woke was even a thing like nowadays and this movie was made based on that show. This is because of the HBO Max thing and not everyone is a fan of musical movies so i could see why the opening weekend wasn't as good as the filmmakers hope. Still, this movie ain't woke, do you know anything about the original Broadway show?? Have you even seen the movie??? It's a great movie and have been getting a lot of positive reviews, just that not everyone's personal taste in movies. There's nothing that much political about this movie nor the show too
Thomas Pulsiver

@Harland Williams Johnston it’s still a box office failure That’s what happens when the leftist agenda is being pushed through hollywood You communists are all the same

Lol, wdym woke? It's just minorities gathering around singing and dancing. Probably another idiot who just called this movie "woke" without knowing anything about the original show or even haven't seen the movie yet, that's dumb

Yes definitely i love this movie it made me tear up a little, only thing that it kinda through me off was that even though that majority of the cast played a Dominican role they are Puerto rican in real life and the only Dominican the girl played a puerto rican role , when in reality Washington heights is a Dominican neighborhood in Majority around 80% thats why its Called officially “Little Dominican Republic “ and puerto ricans really dont have nothing to do with Washington heights there isn’t a big puerto rican population in the Heights its super small and im Puerto rican myself lived my whole life in The Heights and know how it is. Most of the movie in reality was portraying puerto rican culture rather than Dominican culture, they didn’t put bachata, merengue which are Dominican and thats all you hear in Washington heights, so while the movie was good it was kinda misleading with the real culture of the Heights. Also the struggles and all Dominicans in the heights been through it’s something to admire because Washington heights is Still majority a Dominican American neighborhood even though gentrification has been trying to come in but its hard for gentrification because Dominicans are hard workers and majority of the businesses in Washington heights are Dominican around 80% plus every Dominican come from different social economies so it will be very difficult for gentrification to hit the heights hard it has tried but it slow down the gentrification process compared to other neighborhoods in manhattan like harlem and lower east side where gentrification took over harlem, Dominicans have definitely pushed this neighborhood forward with there hard work, shout out to all my Dominicans from a puerto rican brother 🇵🇷🇩🇴📍

Sorry buddy, but that's how musicals worked. Can't deny that. I've seen it and I have to agree that it's the best movie of the year so far. I guess you're being delusional, if you don't like musicals then don't watch this movie and don't throw hate at this movie without even seeing it yet. What's more wack is superhero movies with cringey jokes and overused CGI telling the same story all over again and it's getting exhausting

The movie is mostly an opera/musical. Most, but not all, of the dialogue is sung. The musical numbers make you want to get up and dance. The scene with cooking and dinner made me salivate. It was as if I could smell the arroz con pollo, pasteles etc. Each main character faces obstacles but in the end they make the right decisions. No trick endings. All follow paths which ultimately lead to lives of integrity. It honors those who make the American dream a reality with their hard work and honorable lives. Reminds me of the sacrifices my parents had to make and my childhood in the projects of Brooklyn.

S R. 8 tundi tagasi
@H Nieves funny thing is im Puerto rican and i know 100% i can play a Dominican role way better than those in the “in the fake heights” cast lol, and for sure include all the Dominican slangs in the movie instead of saying whatever just because “we are similar” and thats wrong

@H Nieves look at the movie scarface it was played by an Italian al pocino but he at least put in practice some what of a cuban american act not his culture thats what they had to do “in the heights”
S R.
S R. 10 tundi tagasi
@H Nieves I definitely see your point 100% but im sure others wont agree to a certain extent of course, because its 2021 and now in the present theres more Dominicans than us Puerto ricans in new york so im sure they could’ve gotten a good amount of Dominican cast to play it instead of promoting low-key another culture they lowkey played a “Dominican” role with a puerto rican lifestyle/culture instead of playing the Dominican lifestyle/culture, First Salsa is not played in Washington heights as often as Bachata/Merengue is, you do hear salsa but more like in the clubs with old head Dominicans, but not as much as Dominican music, also Dominicans dont call the icy vendors yunyun they call it Frio Frio so if you’re going to imitate someone else culture at least study it good and not just say dumb things because the movie obviously has to do with the Dominicans experience in Washington heights its all over the overview in the internet so at least play a Decent Dominican role and act . But i do agree with you also latinos gotta stick together and all

@Yari Yari well while Washington heights is a heavily Dominican neighborhood like 80% Dominican, Dominicans don’t act like that in Heights, they dance, listen to music and are happy people but not like the movie make it seem, they make it seem like every person in Washington heights don’t got money to pay rent or its about to lose its businesses, while it has happened of course its not the main focus of Washington heights, funny thing is Majority of the actors are Puerto Ricans playing Dominican roles and they don’t even know what the hells goes on in the heights in real life with all that jumping and screaming that’s not the real life in Washington heights, plus Puerto Rican’s aren’t a big population in Washington heights theres a few puerto ricans but not a lot like the movie make it seems theres nothing Puerto rican about Washington heights in real life and this is coming from a puerto ricans itself, while the move is good its kinda misleading , SHOUT TO ALL MY DOMINICANS FROM A PR BROTHER THAT HAS LIVE AMONG YOU GUYS MY WHOLE LIFE🇵🇷📍🇩🇴
